Who I Help

Your child may be thoughtful, creative, and deeply feeling, yet have difficulty expressing what is happening inside. They may be navigating anxiety, low mood, anger, grief, trauma, sensory differences, attention challenges, or changes at home or school. At times, their feelings or behaviours may seem bigger than the skills currently available to them.

You may notice your child withdrawing, becoming overwhelmed, struggling with confidence, or having difficulty with friendships and family relationships. They may need a place outside the family where they can slow down, feel accepted, and develop language for their emotions without judgment.

Shawna also supports caregivers who want to understand what their child is communicating beneath the behaviour. Therapy can provide children and adolescents with practical skills while helping families strengthen trust, communication, connection, and healthy independence.

How I Help

I create a warm, engaging, and child-centred space where young people can feel safe, heard, and respected. I work collaboratively with children, adolescents, and caregivers to identify strengths, build trust, and develop goals that are meaningful to the young person.

My approach is trauma-informed, decolonial, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate. I draw from cognitive behavioural, acceptance-based, somatic, mindfulness, compassion-focused, emotion-focused, and solution-focused approaches to support coping, emotional regulation, confidence, and social development.

I understand that behaviour is often communication. Rather than focusing only on what needs to stop, we explore what the child may be feeling, needing, or trying to manage. Sessions are paced with care and adapted to the child’s age, culture, interests, learning style, and sensory needs.

My goal is to help young people develop a stronger connection with themselves, greater confidence in their abilities, and the skills they need to navigate relationships and challenges with increasing independence.

Therapies I use in my work:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Somatic & Mindfulness-Based Approaches

  • Compassion-Focused & Emotion-Focused Therapy

  • Solution-Focused Therapy & Motivational Interviewing

  • Strengths-Based, Trauma-Informed & Culturally Responsive Practice

A Little About Me

Inspiration

My counselling career has centred on children and youth. In my role as a Child and Youth Counsellor with the Government of the Northwest Territories, I have provided direct counselling to students from junior kindergarten through Grade 8, worked closely with families and caregivers, and supported culturally diverse caseloads.

Therapeutic Approach

I approach therapy with warmth, creativity, and genuine respect for each child’s perspective. Sessions are collaborative and age-appropriate, with room for conversation, activities, practical skill-building, and caregiver involvement when helpful. I work to ensure that children feel supported rather than judged.

Outside of Session

Outside of sessions, I enjoy creative and artistic projects, whether I am weaving a tapestry or decorating a space.
